JANIE

NICOLL

Janie Nicoll is a Glasgow-based visual artist who works across a range of media, including painting, collage, printmaking, installation, and digital imaging. She trained in Painting at Edinburgh College of Art and undertook a Master of Fine Art at the Glasgow School of Art. She has worked as a lecturer at Edinburgh College of Art, as Gallery Manager at Street Level Gallery, and most recently as Projects & Campaigns Manager at the Scottish Artists Union, having been President of the Union from 2014 to 2017. She has been a Trustee for Engage, the National Organisation for Gallery Education, and Glasgow Independent Studios. She has exhibited nationally and internationally, having received many awards and residencies, and undertaken many socially engaged projects. In 2018, she took part in Glasgow International with ‘In Kind Project’, exploring the ‘in kind’ economy of the visual arts. During her time at SAU, Janie led the development of the Fair Work initiative, establishing a programme for training Reps and overseeing the Climate & Sustainability Subgroup. This showcased the work of many visual artists whose work is intrinsically linked to the themes of Climate and Sustainability, leading to the establishment of a strong network of interested artists throughout Scotland and beyond. A strong personal interest in these themes has been central and in parallel to her practice, resulting in artworks that incorporate landscape imagery, recycled materials, as well as the Gaelic language. Her recent work uses collage and relief printmaking techniques to interrogate notions of cultural identity.
