Francesca

Flynn

Disciplines: Sculpture

Location: Glasgow

Materials: Modelling
Francesca Flynn was born in Lanarkshire, Scotland and is currently based in Glasgow. She works predominantly in the medium of clay, creating bold figurative sculptures full of life. Her sculptures depict the female form, human emotions and the natural world. Francesca studied at Glasgow School of Art (2008-2012), graduating with a First Class Honours Degree in Silversmithing and Jewellery Design, winning prestigious awards such as The Peter Wyllie Davidson Memorial Prize, and the Incorporation of Hammermen Prize. Work from her degree show was purchased for The Glasgow School of Art Archives, now part of the historic collection at The Whisky Bond Glasgow. Following graduation, Francesca was selected as Artist in Residence at the Glasgow School of Art for one year, creating art jewellery for over a dozen exhibitions across the UK and abroad. She was then invited to a placement at a prestigious fine jewellery workshop in Hatton Garden, London and went on to work as a jewellery designer in industry for almost a decade. Francesca continued her own artistic practice alongside her industry design career. In recent years, she has devoted herself to her passion for clay and sculpture, creating works which encapsulate a sense of of dreamlike wonder. The sea is a reoccurring symbol throughout. Each artwork is hand sculpted from an initial block of clay, which the artist carves dynamically, then carefully refines with creativity and natural instinct, often adding detail over many weeks. Francesca glazes and fires each work to her own distinct vision.
