  • Biography
Sarah Murray graduated from the Painting & Printmaking course at Glasgow School of Art in 2017, and continues to work and live in Glasgow. Her paintings and drawings question the impact we have on our surroundings and ways that we manipulate and domesticate nature to fit within our personal spaces and society in general. Cut trees and trained hedges depict a sharp contrast between their organic movement and beauty, and the control and power we hold over them. This part-destruction transforms the plant, however not destroying it all together, but instead creating a new sculptural form. Murray observes the spatiality and decisioning that people employ when creating an outdoor space, and it is this narrative of systemisation over a such a complex and autonomous force that she tries to communicate through her art. She work from a mix of life and photographs, sometimes merging two different landscapes together to create a fictional terrain. When interpreting trees they are often bare as she enjoys the boldness and structural element that this introduces. She depicts not only natural branch growth but also the often sporadic regrowth that occurs after trimming and cutting. Studying and being inspired by art movements such as fauvism and abstract expressionism have led her to use a bright colour palette, working intuitively with the colour as she creates. It is this reason that she chooses oil based materials to work with, as these make for strong and vibrant hues.
