Concepts of time and temporal continuity interest me, and in particular, my practice has been shaped by Bergson’s thinking around duration and memory. Moving through the landscape of the Outer Hebrides, sensing the passage of time through the memories inherent in the place, which stretch back to Neolithic times and beyond, I call into question the nature of time.
Repeatedly walking the same track, ‘each time is the first, every copy an original’ (Tim Ingold), both a material journey and a temporal narrative. This repetition infers time spent in mindful contemplation and time passing, but also temporal continuity between the ancient past, our uncertain present, and the unknown future.
My tracks in the landscape are ephemeral, but a residue of the movement is found in the form of GPS recordings, which are a reflection of clock-time, duration, date, place and distance travelled. A seminal moment arrived when I discovered an eighteenth century French text about pattern permutations, enabling me to develop a personal visual code with which to interpret the memories created in the landscape through my movement. This is reflected in the patterned-ness of the resultant works, which enable the viewer to walk round, past and through interpretations of time and place.
I use walking as a means of both creative thinking and the collection of temporal information. Alongside this, interests in line, pattern and repetition enable me to explore and interpret thinking about time through different materials and processes.
