Hazel Vellacott is a visual artist based in the Scottish Borders. She likes nothing better than to immerse herself in the messy process of making paintings. Her studio is packed with all kinds of resources that she squirrels away until they inspire, or find their way into a new piece of work. Old wallpaper, china shards, antique thread bobbins sit next to fabric swatches, letters and discarded drawings. She works with traditional and modern materials to make her paintings, and often uses simple print-making techniques. The term “mixed-media” is apt for her work.
Alongside this, she recognises that the discipline of drawing from life underpins this creative process. She began her study of life-drawing and painting at Edinburgh College of Art, and then went on to study painting at Leith School of Art.
She enjoys teaching and runs occasional workshops from her rural studio.
