Objects, signs and symbols develop into ideas to tell personal and collective stories from my childhood, since I loved to dress up and stand on a stage. Despite all our diverse borders, we all have access to these stories and find comfort in familiar details, steeped in our collective past and shared visual language.
I use the free spirit of collage to bring together figures and narrative, on coastlines or in the hills. Climbing up high helps me take the long view. The beginning of a painting is often out of my control. It is random. If it does not take risks, I am not excited by it. Layers of collage and water based mixed media are to me, layers of thought. They are the 'pentimenti' which show traces of previous work underneath. The process of addition and subtraction keep the paintings fluid until the final narrative begins to appear.
As Author Illustrator, my recent publication "Waymark". illustrates my pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela with accompanying poems.
