I paint in watercolours, inspired by a variety of subjects including boats, harbours, corrugated iron sheds, the natural world and the coasts of northeast and northwest Scotland. And flowers and vegetables.
A keen photographer, I collect images of places I have been, both small scale and large scale. Mainly these remain as photographs, but sometimes they will serve as reference material for a painting.
Starting painting later in life, after working for two decades as a research scientist, my work has developed from representational depictions of structures and spaces, to more abstract creation. Trying to capture a feeling or sensation rather than a place. This is what I have been aiming for with my most recent work, the Shipping Forecast series.
