As costumes are generally considered as ephemeral pieces of art I believe that it is crucial to acknowledge the environmental footprint of their design and making. Working on my university final year costume design project has put me into a privileged position of being able to choose my own story and genre to design and make costumes for. I was therefore given the perfect conditions to experiment with the design development process and to explore a costume designer’s possibilities of incorporating environmental sustainability into the core of their designs. Working on the designs for the music video to Jamie Woon’s Spirits has given me the opportunity to further explore my possibilities of designing costumes with environmental sustainability in mind. It was also a proof that environmentally positive innovation in costumes could work as an opportunity for new dreams and explorations, rather than another restriction for designer’s creativity. My aim is to keep exploring the possibilities of incorporating environmentally sustainble thinking into clothing design, whether it would be used for costumes or fashion.
