2010
2010 saw the turn of VAS to be allocated the downstairs galleries, we went from last year’s three floors to three small rooms while our submissions remained at almost 700 works! This, while exciting, set us an enormous challenge in selecting and hanging a cohesive exhibition that reflected the rich diversity of disciplines we are so proud to represent.
We were particularly pleased to have such a strong showing of furniture in 2010, and again our lack of space was a frustration felt by us all.
VAS was delighted to have Deirdre Nelson and Tim Morgan as 2010′s invited artists.
Deirdre Nelson
Deirdre, originally from Ireland, has been based in Glasgow since graduating from Glasgow School of Art in 1992. On graduating she became involved in many community and education projects and later returned to education to complete a Master’s degree in philosophy. Her work employs a variety of techniques and materials fusing traditional and contemporary textile skills, and is an often humorous commentary on social and textile history. She has exhibited in Britain and overseas and was selected for the first Jerwood Contemporary Makers exhibition.
“My textile work has evolved through experimenting with materials and methods of making in which hand work and craftsmanship provide both direction and context.
Hand skills are transposed though the work in a humorous commentary on social and textile history within the contemporary gallery.”
Tim Morgan
Tim is fascinated by the theories and stories we create to account for our own existence, and by the interaction of our genetic and cultural inheritance with our own experience. The physical qualities of materials are fundamental to Tim’s work. A sculpture’s structure, engineering and interaction with its environment are the language by which a metaphor is created. In particular this work is inspired by thoughts about the passing of time, from the cycle of life, to the infinite reach of time in the Universe. Tim would like the viewer to feel uplifted in the sculpture’s presence.
